September 11, 1776: Admiral Richard Howe, commander of the British forces in New York, invites patriots Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge to a peace conference at the Billopp House on Staten Island, where they refuse the Crown’s offer of an honorable return to British rule in exchange for revoking the Declaration of Independence.
